Before you can be a non-profit company you need to get something called an EIN, an Employee Identification Number, from the IRS.  Getting an EIN does NOT make you a non-profit company.  It is, however, the first step in moving in that direction because you will need it to fill out your 501(c)3 application (which IS the way you apply for non-profit status).

You can get an Employee Identification Number either online through http://www.irs.gov/ (you will be filling out a SS4 form) OR you can call 800-829-4933 between the hours of 7:30am and 5:30pm.  Other than wait time, the process only takes about 10 to 15 minutes once you get a representative.
